My Hole In The Water

Haul Out

It took little over an hour to make the trip to Ferry Point Marina from Bud's home.  We tied up at the pier for the evening. I had scheduled the haul out for the next morning and booked a marine services mechanic to pull the engine out of the boat. That night I cut the engine bolts, removed the engine manifold, drive shaft coupling, throttle and transmission linkages, fuel and water lines, wires and everything that was connected to the old engine.  As the marine services company charged by the hour I wanted to limit the onsite time that would be charged to my account.

Haul out began the next morning when the marine services mechanic arrived.  My wife and I were anxious to see the bottom of the boat.  The rudder control was stiff and we couldn't get the centerboard to come down.  Haul out began at approximately 10:30AM.  I had managed to cut everything that was holding the engine in by using an electric reciprocating saw. The only thing that I missed was the alternator.  The mechanic had to remove it in order to pull the engine out of the engine room compartment.  Other than that engine removal went very smoothly.

When we finally inspected the bottom of the boat we could see that it was completely fouled with small mussels.

During bottom cleaning we figured out why the centerboard was not coming down. It was gone!
